The History of Komodo

Komodo. The very word conjures up thoughts of mystery and myth. A Jurassic world where rolling hillsides of savanna grassland meet long stretches of palm fringed beaches. A place where massive tectonic plateaus collide beneath the turquoise waters of the Flores. Sea driving rugged mountains skyward. Active volcanoes and the strong currents of the Lint Straits create giant whirlpools, guarding the island from the outside world. Great reptiles bathe in the sun as the sounds of exotic birds bring the dense forest to life. This island supports a limited number of plant and animal species, only those who have been able to adapt to this harsh environment have survived. This is the world of the Komodo Dragon, the island of Komodo, Indonesia.

The last home of giant lizard Varanus Komodoensis East Nusa Tenggara is home to hundreds of ethnic groups who speak scores of different languages and dialects and hold widespread beliefs in magic. Flores and Sumba produce some of the most exquisite hand woven ikat in Indonesia. Another of the area’s striking cultural characteristics is the great variety of adat architecture, the shaggy, elliptical thatched roof houses of Timor, the Sumbanese native houses which resemble a gigantic straw hat. In Sumba, massive stone-slab tombs sit in the front yards of houses.

Outstanding natural wonders include Komodo’s 3m long monitor lizards, the coloured volcanic lakes of Kelimutu, superlative snorkelling with 100m drop offs near Flores, the virgin game reserve of Moyo Island, and the huge rocks in West Timor which look like the ruins of ancient castles. The area is also rich in dances, arts, animist ceremonies, and unique religious holidays.
